Just 12 km away from the city of Kavala, next to the archaeological site of Philippi is located the place where the Apostle Paul baptized the first Christian woman in Europe – Lydia, and it was here that the first baptismal ceremony was held in Europe. Today here is the Baptistery where the christenings are held today.

The Archaeological Site of Philippi is located in eastern Macedonia and comprises the ruins of a city that saw its heyday in Roman and Early Christian times. Founded in 356 BCE by King Philip II, the site is characterized by monuments from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Early Christian period.

The monastery of Panagia Eikosifinisa with its miraculous icon is one of the largest pilgrimages in Macedonia and the oldest active monastery in Greece and Europe. This place is sanctified by the Orthodox tradition from the earliest centuries of Christianity. We stop to marvel the miraculous icon and spend time learning about the ascetic life.
