The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin is the second oldest church on the island, constructed behind the harbor in 1828. Of particular note is the authentic icon of the Assumption dating back to 1562, painted by Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco), elevating the church to one of the most significant landmarks on the island.

Cathedral of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of Hermoupolis. Located in the prestigious Vaporia district, the cathedral boasts lavish interiors and an impressive architectural structure, surrounded by unique high-ceiling mansions that seem to float above the sea. The area “Vaporia” with neoclassical mansions – also called “little Venice”.
– Theatro Apollon
Next stop is the iconic Apollon Theater (first Opera House of Greece), a major attraction and cultural symbol of Hermoupolis. Built in 1864 by Italian architect Pietro Sampo, the theater draws inspiration from several Italian standards, including the Scala di Milano, and hosts various cultural events today. Entrance fee is 2€ per person.

Miaoulis Square is the historic square of Syros featuring architectural marvels in a dreamy landscape of the 19th century. Here, we’ll visit the Town Hall, one of the largest in Greece, designed by Ernst Ziller. This architectural gem, built in 1898, blends Tuscan, Ionic, and Corinthian styles and features a magnificent 15.5-meter-high princely staircase.
– Archaeological Museum of Syros
Before leaving the main square, we will visit the Archaeological Museum of Syros, founded in 1834 and one of the oldest museums in Greece. Since 1899, the museum has been housed in four rooms of Ermoupolis City Hall. Its collections include exhibits, artifacts, sculptures, and inscriptions from the early Cycladic and Byzantine periods.

Walk among the narrow streets, small groceries, shops, traditional stores of Hermoupolis to smell Syros aromas, meet locals, see their everyday life, discover images and experiences of a bygone era and encounter monuments along with neoclassical buildings from the imperious history.

Ano Syros is situated at the top of the hill to the left of Hermoupolis. Here, we’ll explore notable landmarks including the Cathedral of St. George, the island’s Catholic Cathedral, the Catholic Monastery of Capuchins, and the church of St. John, which dates back to 1635. Then, we’ll leisurely wander around the picturesque center known as ‘Piatsa’.
